From Australia, “A foster parent has been charged with sexually abusing a young child in her care, the South Australian Education Department has confirmed.

On Monday, police charged a 47-year-old woman from the northern suburbs with the persistent sexual exploitation of a child four years ago.

Education Department deputy chief executive Etienne Scheepers said the woman has not been a foster carer since 2011.

“The allegations have come to light after the alleged victim discussed them with their current carer, who notified Families SA, which in turn notified police,” he said.

“Counselling and support is being provided to the alleged victim who is currently in secure, family-based care.”

He said carers were required to undertake a thorough screening process that included criminal history checks and child protection history records.

“The vast majority of foster carers are dedicated, selfless people making a positive difference in the life of a vulnerable young person,” Mr Scheepers said.

There are about 1,300 registered carer households in SA.”
