REFORM Puzzle Piece

Update:“The teenager accused of killing two people in Chelsea last June appeared in court Wednesday for a hearing to determine whether he will be tried as an adult.

Jason Hunnewell, 17, who was 16 at the time, is charged in the deaths of Christopher Hunnewell, 43, and Ty Carter.

Christopher, Jason’s cousin, was serving as his foster parent at the time.

The court heard details Wednesday of Jason’s childhood. including testimony about his mother’s substance abuse and a reported 0.20 blood alcohol level at his birth.

It also included testimony about his father who is currently in jail for the sexual assault of his half-sister, the 17 various placements Jason has had and behavioral concerns raised by several former foster parents.

The defense argues he was failed by his family and the system, and that it’s not appropriate to try him as an adult. The prosecution says that public safety is at stake, saying his childhood doesn’t excuse the crimes he committed.

Family members in the courtroom, wearing ‘Justice for CJ and Ty’ t-shirts, are calling for Jason to be tried as an adult and for a life sentence.

They say they wish DHHS, who at times had custody of Jason, had alerted them to past concerns about him.

“Honestly, some of it was hard to hear because it’s really hard for us to hear anyone defend him because of what he did so it’s really hard and there’s a lot of things I’m hearing that aren’t really what it really is type-thing so I guess we’re going to have to wait for our time to present what we know and what we’re familiar with and the things that happened between Jason once he reached our family,” said Jessie Hunnewell, mother and wife of the victims.

Jason, still in court as a minor, is not allowed to be on camera. Hearings are scheduled to continue through Friday.”
