How Could You? Hall of Shame-South Africa-Ivakele case-Child Death

From Cape Town, South Africa,6-year-old foster child,Ivakele, died on April 22, 2026. Ivakele reportedly collapsed and died.

Her biological mother, Charline, said that her two kids were taken by social workers in November 2025. She had left them with a neighbor while she worked on farms.She said when she visited them in foster care, they were losing weight. Ivakele was supposed to be in Grade R ( the equivalent of kindergarten), but she was kept at home. During one visit, the children were locked inside a bathroom.

Ivakele’s family claims they were told to “collect and bury the child themselves”.

Ivakele’s mother said the matter in before the Child Death Panel and that burial support would be considered if they can prove that neglect or abuse is what has caused Ivakele’s death.
