Lawsuit: Former St. Aloysius Home

“More than 50 lawsuits have been filed against the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence by alleged sexual abuse victims in just three weeks, with one location appearing most frequently among them to date.

Globe Rhode Island Reporter Amanda Milkovits has been following dozens of lawsuits that have been filed against institutions over child sexual abuse after a new law took effect, amending the statute of limitations and extending the window for victims to take legal action in Rhode Island.”

“This comes after Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha released a sweeping report in March on an investigation into decades of child sexual abuse and systemic coverup, which “credibly accused” 72 clergy members.

St. Aloysius Home was a catholic orphanage for neglected children in Smithfield. In the 1970s, the R.I. Department of Children, Youth and Families began sending boys in its custody to St. Aloysius. That arrangement ended in 1993 after 16 boys reported sexual abuse and the orphanage shut down the next year.”

“Father Rene Guertin and Father Robert McIntyre led St. Aloysius and are accused of abusing more than a dozen children combined. Milkovits interviewed Father McIntyre back in 2018.

Now, six lawsuits name St. Aloysius, which were filed by men who lived there between 1969 and 1989. Four of those lawsuits accuse McIntyre of rape.”
