UK Mother Reunites with Daughter
“A British mother has been reunited with the daughter she was forced to place for adoption 62 years ago.
At 15, Avril, now 77, became pregnant and was sent away to a mother and baby home in Carlisle, England, where she gave birth to her daughter, whom she named Michelle.
The pair were together for just eight weeks before Avril was forced to place her daughter for adoption, but she continued to search for her. They were reunited through the British television show Long Lost Family, which aims to track down and rejoin families after years of separation.
Avril and her daughter, who was renamed Eleanor after she was adopted, have now revealed their experiences of finding each other after more than six decades apart.
“I was told on more than one occasion I would never be able to find my Michelle and that she would’ve been issued with a new birth certificate so I would never ever be able to find her,” Avril said on British television show This Morning.
But things changed when she happened to see the end of the Long Lost Family show on TV and was encouraged to get in touch with the production team by her other daughter, Sharon.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Avril said.
During her interview with This Morning, Avril opened up about the limited memories she had with Eleanor at the mother and baby home.
“I think because it involved so much pain, I blocked it out,” she said. “I just remember being in that hall, living in the hall, looking after Eleanor for eight weeks and then forced to part with her.”
Before parting ways, Avril met with Eleanor’s adoptive parents. “I was glad I met them because they were nice people and I knew they were going to give her a nice life that I couldn’t give her,” Avril added.
After saying goodbye to her daughter, she returned to Newcastle, around 60 miles east of Carlisle, where she was expected to return to her normal life.
Avril described that time period as being “really difficult,” adding, “It took me about two years to sort of… I never came to terms, never ever, but it took me about two years to want to even be here. I just didn’t… I just went round in a dream, really.”
It was only when she was in her 40s that Avril was given a photograph of Eleanor, which she put on her bedside table.
Eleanor said that her mother would speak about Avril and told her how upset she had been to place her for adoption.
“I think when I had Bex, my daughter who is 38, and when I had her, the thought of someone taking her away from me at 6 to 8 weeks old, I think I’d just had wanted to stab them and I’m not a violent person, I must add,” Eleanor told This Morning.
“It just made me think more and more about Avril. When I did my nursing training, I was with a young mom, whose baby was going for adoption, and I was with her when the new parents arrived to pick him up,” Eleanor added. “We both ended up in floods of tears. It wasn’t my tears, but I could just see and empathize with her and see how hard it was for her.”
She told the show she had a “good childhood” growing up in Cumbria, around 70 miles southwest of where Avril was living.
“I had mom and dad. Dad worked really hard; he built up his own business. I had good friends, good schools, lots of adventures,” Eleanor said, adding that she had “happy memories.”
Eleanor added that she initially didn’t want to pursue finding her birth mother because she didn’t want to “upset Avril’s life.”
“I didn’t know if her family knew about me; I didn’t want to cause any problems for her,” she said on the show. “I guess for some people, [they] can feel rejected having been adopted; I never felt rejected, I was always told I was special, and I’d been chosen.”
After one of the hosts remarked on how similar they looked, Avril replied that the pair even have “each other’s ways.”
“We’ve got some similar facial expressions, and we do quite a few things the same. It is weird,” Eleanor said.
Right before meeting Avril, Eleanor said her “stomach felt a bit churny,” and added that she had fears about whether her biological mother would like her and if they would get along.
But those concerns “just melted away” when they were reunited, Eleanor said.
When asked if they felt an instant bond, Avril replied, “Yep, she was back in my arms where she belongs.”
“I’ll never let go of her again,” she added.”
