How Could You? Hall of Shame-Keith William Shirey and Denah Shirey UPDATED

According to the Casselberry Police, Shirey spanked his three adoptive children so hard he would leave “dark gray purple and red bruises” all over their bodies. Neighbors say the kids were all under the age of 10.“Never heard anything like that just heard the children playing in the back. They were kind of to themselves,” said a neighbor Lou Difazio.Police say Shirey used the “spanking spoon” to discipline his kids. It was a large plastic spoon. In one instance officers say Shirey spanked his son after stealing candy from his sister. The father left multiple “purple-red bruises” on the boy’s legs, butt, back, and arms. Police say if the children screamed during the spankings Shirey would put his hand over their mouths.”Kids are kids they’re going to test the boundaries on everything,” said Difazio and recommended other ways to discipline your child. “Like time outs, conversations, cool downs. You can’t beat babies. What does that do?”

A certified pediatric nurse practitioner visited the young children at their home. She told police these bruises were so severe they could “possibly lead to excessive bleeding into the muscles and tissues which could lead to shock or kidney failure.”

“I have 6 kids and 9 grandchildren so I don’t like it at all. Bruises on a baby there’s no reason for that, it’s sad,” said the next door neighbor.

Shirey was arrested Wednesday afternoon. He made his first appearance at the Seminole county courthouse the next day. He’s charged with cruelty toward child aggravated child abuse. We’re told the children are in protective care and this case remains under investigation. Shirey’s wife told police she rarely spanked the kids and no charges have been filed against her.”

She has been charged with “CRUELTY TOWARD CHILD CHILD ABUSE” Her detailed case view can be seen at http://www.seminoleclerk.org/. Bond was set at $2000 and Bonded out on May 27. She will be arraigned on June 24, 2014.

Update 2: A search of the Seminole County court records shows that Keith and Denah  have  a court hearing on 9/24/14.

Update 3: A search of the Seminole County court records shows that Keith plead Nolo Contendre on CHILD ABUSE 827.03(1) F-3 on 1/8/15.He Received 200 hours of public Service. Denah plead Nolo Contendre to neglect  OF CHILD 827.03(2)(D) F-3 on 1/8/15.She received probation for 3 years.
